Section-Wise Syllabus Breakdown

Paper I – Descriptive (≈ 50 marks) 

Topics include:

  • Essay Writing (on social issues, law & order, economic/societal development) 

  • Precis / Summary Writing (condensing a passage) 

  • Translation: English ↔ Kannada and Kannada ↔ English 

Paper II – Objective (≈ 150 marks) 

Topics include:

  1. Mental Ability / Numerical Ability

    • Number system, HCF & LCM, ratio & proportion, percentage

    • Time, speed & distance; Time & work; Pipes & cisterns; Mixture & allegation

    • Data interpretation, average, profit & loss, clocks & calendars, trains problems 

  2. Current Affairs / General Studies / General Knowledge

    • Indian & Karnataka history (ancient, medieval, modern)

    • Indian Constitution, polity, economics, budget & five-year plans

    • Geography (India & Karnataka), science & technology, art & culture, literature

    • Awards & honours, world affairs, national organisations, international bodies, sports & games, important days, inventions & discoveries 

  3. Language Skills (under Objective or part of language paper)

    • English vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, sentence rearrangement, idioms & phrases 

    • Kannada language usage, essay, translation, comprehension in some cases. 


Key Points for Preparation

  • Give strong attention to translation skills since both languages are involved (English & Kannada).

  • For numerical/mental ability, focus on speed & accuracy as many topics overlap with competitive maths.

  • Current affairs should include both national + Karnataka-specific updates (history, culture, economy of Karnataka).

  • Practice previous year papers or mock tests to adapt to the hybrid pattern (descriptive + objective).

  • Ensure you read the official notification for that year to check final syllabus, marking scheme, negative marking (often -0.25 for wrong in objective)
