1. For Departmental Candidates (LDCE – Limited Departmental Competitive Examination)

The LDCE for Inspector of Posts is conducted by the Department of Posts (DoP) for existing employees (Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant, etc.).
It tests a candidate’s knowledge of postal operations, rules, and administrative procedures.


Paper-wise Syllabus:

Paper I – Postal Operations (150 Marks)

    • Indian Post Office Act, 1898 & Indian Post Office Rules, 1933

  2. Mail Operations:

    • Transmission, sorting, and delivery of mail

    • Speed Post, Registered Post, Parcel services, VPP, Business Post

  3. Financial and Savings Bank Operations:

    • Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) procedures

    • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) services

    • Money Orders, RD, TD, NSC, KVP, and other postal financial schemes

  4. Insurance Operations:

    • Postal Life Insurance (PLI)

    • Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI)

  5. Business Development and Customer Service:

    • India Post Business Development & Marketing strategy

    • Customer care, grievance redressal, complaint handling

  6. Technology and IT Systems:

    • Core Banking Solutions (CBS)

    • Core Insurance Solutions (CIS)

    • India Post Network & IT Modernization Project


Paper II – Postal Accounts and Rules (150 Marks)

  2. Establishment and Administrative Rules:

    • Pension Rules, TA/DA Rules, LTC Rules

  3. Financial Management and Budgeting:

    • Budget preparation and control

    • Audit and internal checks

    • Financial Hand Book (FHB) – Volume I & II

  4. Procurement and Stock Management:

    • Purchase procedures, stock verification, stationery management

    • Inspection and Internal Audit

  5. Human Resource and Office Management:

    • Recruitment rules, promotions, disciplinary procedures

    • Record keeping and documentation


Paper III – General Awareness, Current Affairs, and English (100 Marks)

General Awareness & Current Affairs:

  • Indian Geography, Polity, History, and Economy

  • Major Government Schemes

  • Current national & international events

  • Environmental awareness and general science

English Language:

  • Grammar & Vocabulary

  • Sentence Correction & Error Spotting

  • Reading Comprehension

  • Precis Writing and Letter Writing (Descriptive)

2. For Direct Entry Candidates (Through SSC CGL Exam)

The Inspector of Posts post is also filled through the SSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission.

Tier II (Objective – 400 Marks)

Final Selection (Direct Entry via SSC CGL):

  • Based on aggregate marks of Tier I + Tier II.

  • Followed by Document Verification and Medical Fitness Test.

  • Selected candidates are appointed as Inspector of Posts (Group B) under the Ministry of Communications.
