The eligibility criteria for the SSC Stenographer Exam are as follows:

1. Nationality/Citizenship

A candidate must be:

  • A citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, intending to settle permanently, or
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries intending to settle in India permanently.

(Candidates other than Indian citizens must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.)

2. Age Limit (as of the notification date)

  • Stenographer Grade 'C': 18 to 30 years
  • Stenographer Grade 'D': 18 to 27 years

3. Educational Qualification

  • Must have passed 12th Standard (10+2) or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.

4. Skill Requirements (Stenography)

  • Candidates must possess the required Stenography Skill for dictation and transcription:


Transcription Time:

  • English: 40 minutes (Grade 'C') / 50 minutes (Grade 'D')
  • Hindi: 55 minutes (Grade 'C') / 65 minutes (Grade 'D')

5. Physical Standards (Only for Specific Departments):

  • For candidates applying to Central Police Organizations (if applicable), certain physical standards may be required. These details will be mentioned in the specific job description in the notification.
