1. What is Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) in India Post?

  • MTS is a Group ‘C’ Central Government post in the Department of Posts.

  • They perform non-technical and routine tasks in post offices, mail offices, and administrative offices.

  • MTS positions are usually entry-level jobs, suitable for candidates with minimum educational qualification (usually 10th pass).


2. Job Profile / Responsibilities

Typical duties include:

  • Clerical Support: Assisting in filing, maintaining records, and handling correspondence.

  • Office Support: Photocopying, sending fax, maintaining registers.

  • Mail Handling: Sorting, lifting, and carrying letters, parcels, and other postal articles.

  • Cleaning & Maintenance: Keeping office and premises clean and organized.

  • Other Duties: Helping senior staff in routine administrative tasks.

⚠️ Note: MTS is primarily support staff, not involved in managerial or clerical decision-making.


3. Eligibility Criteria

  • Nationality: Indian citizen (or eligible migrant as per government rules).

  • Educational Qualification: 10th pass (Secondary School Certificate) from a recognized board.

  • Age Limit: Typically 18–25 years (relaxation for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD as per Govt rules).

  • Other Requirements: Medically fit and physically able to perform routine duties.


4. Exam / Selection Process

MTS recruitment is usually conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

  • Paper-I: Computer-Based Test (CBT)

    • General Intelligence & Reasoning

    • Numerical Aptitude

    • General English / Hindi

    • General Awareness / GK

    • Duration: 90 minutes

    • Marks: 100

    • Negative marking applicable

  • Paper-II: Descriptive / Typing / Skill Test (if applicable)

    • Usually qualifying in nature

    • Tests basic writing or typing skills depending on notification

  • Merit List: Based on Paper-I scores and qualifying skill test (if any)

5. Salary & Allowances

  • Pay Level: Level‑1 (7th CPC) → Basic Pay: ₹19,900 – ₹63,200 per month

  • In-Hand Salary: Approximately ₹22,000 – ₹26,000 per month including:

    • Dearness Allowance (DA)

    • House Rent Allowance (HRA) based on city classification

    • Transport Allowance (TA)

    • Other central government benefits (PF, Pension, Medical facilities)


6. Career Growth

  • Entry-Level: Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS)

  • Promotions / Departmental Exams:

    • With experience and departmental exams, MTS can be promoted to:

      • Postal Assistant / Sorting Assistant (PA/SA)

      • Clerical / Administrative posts

      • Eventually to Group B posts like Inspector or Supervisor

  • Promotions depend on seniority, performance, and passing departmental exams
