The Railway Ministerial and Isolated Categories Exam Pattern is designed to test candidates' general aptitude, reasoning ability, language skills, and professional knowledge (if applicable). The pattern varies slightly depending on the specific post. Below is an overview of the Computer-Based Test (CBT) and other stages:

1. Exam Stages

The recruitment process typically consists of:

  • Computer-Based Test (CBT) – Common for all posts.
  • Skill Test/Typing Test – For specific posts like stenographer or typist.
  • Document Verification – Verification of eligibility criteria and qualifications.
  • Medical Examination – To assess physical and medical fitness.

2. Computer-Based Test (CBT) Pattern


Key Details : Question Type: Objective (Multiple Choice Questions).

Marking Scheme:

  • +1 mark for each correct answer.
  • Negative Marking: 1/3 mark deducted for each wrong answer.
  • Language of Exam: The CBT is conducted in multiple languages, including English and Hindi, and regional languages as per the RRB.

3. Skill Test/Typing Test

For Stenographer:

Stenography Skill Test:

  • Dictation speed of 80 words per minute for a duration of 10 minutes.

Transcription time:

  • 50 minutes (English)
  • 65 minutes (Hindi)

For Typist:

Typing Proficiency Test:

Minimum typing speed of:

  • 30 words per minute (WPM) in English, or
  • 25 WPM in Hindi.

4. Document Verification

  • Candidates clearing the CBT and Skill/Typing Test (if applicable) are called for document verification.
  • Original documents like educational certificates, caste certificates (if applicable), and identity proofs are verified.

5. Medical Examination

  • Candidates who clear all previous stages undergo a medical fitness test based on the post they applied for.
  • Medical standards depend on the job's physical requirements.

6. Important Notes

The CBT syllabus includes:

  • General Awareness: Current events, Indian Railways, Indian history, geography, sports, awards, etc.
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: Analogy, syllogism, puzzles, data interpretation, series, etc.
  • General English/Hindi: Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, and sentence structure.
  • Posts with Professional Ability Requirements include additional subject-specific questions.
