The RRB NTPC selection process consists of the following stages:

  • Stage 1 CBT (Computer-Based Test) – Common for all posts.
  • Stage 2 CBT (Post-Specific Test) – Based on the post applied for.

Skill Test:

  • Typing Skill Test (TST) – For clerical posts.

1. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) – For Traffic Assistant and Station Master posts.

2. Document Verification (DV) – For shortlisted candidates.

  • Medical Examination – To ensure medical fitness for the respective posts.

Stage 1 CBT (Preliminary Exam)

This stage is common for all posts and serves as a screening test.

Exam Details:

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test
  • Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for PwD candidates with scribe)
  • Total Questions: 100

Subjects:

  • Mathematics: 30 questions
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 30 questions
  • General Awareness: 40 questions

Marking Scheme:

  • +1 for each correct answer
  • -1/3 for each incorrect answer
  • Qualifying Nature: Marks obtained are used to shortlist candidates for Stage 2.

Stage 2 CBT (Main Exam)

This stage is specific to the post applied for and has a higher difficulty level than Stage 1.

Exam Details:

  • Mode: Computer-Based Test
  • Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for PwD candidates with scribe)
  • Total Questions: 120

Subjects:

  • Mathematics: 35 questions
  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: 35 questions
  • General Awareness: 50 questions

Marking Scheme:

  • +1 for each correct answer
  • -1/3 for each incorrect answer
  • Post-Specific Cutoff: Separate cutoffs for different posts.

4. Skill Test : Depending on the post, a skill test may be required:

Typing Skill Test (TST)

  • Applicable for posts like Junior Clerk cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist, etc.

Candidates must demonstrate a typing speed of:

  • 30 words per minute (WPM) in English, or
  • 25 WPM in Hindi.
  • This is qualifying in nature.

Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

  • Applicable for posts like Traffic Assistant and Station Master.

Focuses on cognitive abilities, including:

  • Memory
  • Attention
  • Reasoning
  • Multitasking
  • Qualifying Nature: Candidates must score at least 42 marks in each test module (no relaxation for reserved categories).

5. Document Verification (DV)

  • Candidates who qualify for Stage 2 CBT and Skill Tests are called for document verification.
  • Relevant educational certificates, caste certificates, and other documents are verified.

6. Medical Examination

  • After DV, shortlisted candidates undergo a medical examination to ensure they meet the medical fitness standards required for the post.

Normalization of Marks:

  • Marks are normalized as the exam is conducted in multiple shifts.
  • Final merit is based on normalized scores.

Negative Marking:

  • Deduction of 1/3 marks for each incorrect answer in both CBT stages.

  • Not all posts require skill tests; check post requirements in the official notification.
