The Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) eligibility criteria are defined by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Here are the detailed criteria:

1. Nationality

To be eligible for the IRMS exam, the candidate must be:

  • A citizen of India, or
  • A subject of Nepal, or
  • A subject of Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, intending to settle permanently, or
  • A person of Indian origin (PIO) who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam) intending to settle permanently in India.

2. Educational Qualification

The candidate must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university. The specific requirements depend on the chosen subject for the exam:

  • Engineering Graduates : A degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering is required for those appearing under the respective technical fields.
  • Commerce Graduates : A degree in Commerce or Accountancy for candidates opting for the Commerce and Accountancy subject in the Mains exam.
  • General Graduates : A graduation degree in any discipline for those appearing in General Studies-related subjects.

3. Age Limit

The age criteria for IRMS are as follows:

  • Minimum Age: 21 years.
  • Maximum Age: 32 years (as of August 1 of the exam year).

Age Relaxation:

  • SC/ST: 5 years (up to 37 years).
  • OBC: 3 years (up to 35 years).
  • Persons with Disabilities (PwD): 10 years.
  • Ex-Servicemen: 5 years (additional relaxation for specific cases).

4. Number of Attempts

The number of attempts allowed for the IRMS exam varies by category:

  • General Category: 6 attempts.
  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 9 attempts.
  • SC/ST: Unlimited attempts (until the upper age limit).
  • PwD: 9 attempts (for General/OBC) and unlimited for SC/ST.

5. Physical Fitness

Candidates recommended for selection must meet the medical and physical fitness standards set by the Indian Railways. Details of the medical requirements are specified in the official notification.

Additional Notes:

  • Candidates in the final year of their degree program can apply but must produce proof of qualification at the time of Mains exam submission.
  • Candidates already serving in government roles must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer.
